GHS set to provide SmartExams to patients who can't get to a doctor's office

GREENVILLE, SC (FOX Carolina) - When you get a cough, runny nose and sneezes, you just don’t feel well and you may need a doctor or a nurse practitioner.

“I just love patient care,” Kristine Leo said.

She’s a family nurse practitioner with the Greenville Health System.

“It just feels good at the end of the day when you’ve really kind of done your job,” she said.

And now you can add telehealth provider to her resume’. The new SmartExam program allows GHS patients to get a diagnosis from nurse practitioners and physician assistants by using their smart phones, or a computer.

“So, you can just access this from anywhere,” she said.

However, those diagnosis’s are only for minor complaints.

“Sore throat, ear pain, cough, congestion, nausea,” Leo said.

For more severe symptoms, health care providers will direct them to the next lever of care base on information a patient provides.

“If they need to go to an Urgent Care or they need to go to an emergency room- that information is going to be provided to them,” Leo said.

A patient can choose from a list of symptoms and can upload pictures for certain ailments. The picture then goes to an advanced practice provider who will diagnose the situation and provide a treatment plan.

The health provider then sends prescribed medicine to a pharmacy at the choice of the patient.

“Our goal is you’re going to have that response within an hour hopefully even sooner,” Leo said. “So, it’s very convenient and user friendly.”

The GHS patient then pays a $20 consultation fee only for the services provided. Parents can also use the service for children between the ages of 3 months to 18 years old and parents will be connected with pediatric providers for treatment plans.

The service will be available to GHS patients on April 4 and will run daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. If you’re a GHS patient and would like to use the service you can log onto your GHS MyChart or you can find the SmartExam web address here.
